Rebel State Park
Rebel State Park traces its origin back to the days of the Civil War. It is the final resting place of a young Confederate Soldier who was gunned down by three Union Cavalrymen. Cane River Creole National Park
The park’s resources consist of 63 historic structures, impressive plantation landscapes, family and plantation records, and an extensive collection of tools, equipment, furniture and personal items. When touring the park dress comfortably, wear walking shoes, sun block and insect repellent. Each tour (staff guidance mandatory) takes about one hour.

Briarwood: Caroline Dorman Nature Preserve
Open for guided tours every weekend in March, April, May, August and November. Caroline Dormon was the first woman employed in forestry in the United States. Almost single-handedly she worked with Louisiana and U.S. Forest Service to establish Kisatchie National Forest. At Briarwood Caroline collected and replanted her favorite native plants. Conservationists and horticulturists from all over the world travel to Briarwood-to walk down forest trails, to savor the beauty of the Louisiana iris bog, to admire the reflection pool and to enjoy the most complete botanical and wildlife sanctuary in Louisiana. 216 Caroline Dormon Road, Natchitoches, La. 318-576-3379

Historic State Sites

Adai Indian Nation Culture Center
American Indian tribe that is indigenous to the original territories of Louisiana. 8,000 square foot all-weather theater center. Travel back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. 4460 Hwy. 485, Robeline, La. 877-472-1007
Fort Jesup
Just 30 minutes outside of Natchitoches lies Fort Jesup, the designated “neutral ground”, when the Louisiana Purchase Treaty of 1803 failed to clearly define the western boundary of Louisiana, which was also the western border of the country at that time, the U.S. claimed eastern Texas and Spain claimed western Louisiana. This neutral ground was declared and without soldier, rogues ruled the region until 1819. Multiple buildings on site. 318-256-4117
Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site
This is the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase territory. Includes a full-scale replica of a French fort built in 1732. Natchitoches, La. 318-356-5555
Los Adaes State Historic Site
Los Adaes was the capital of Texas on the northeastern frontier of New Spain from 1729 to 1770. It included a mission, San Miguel de Linares de los Adaes, and a presidio, Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Los Adaes. It is in Robeline, 6 miles outside of Natchitoches, going west. Mansfield Park
Mansfield State Historic Site
The site of a Confederate Victory at Mansfield. Here Confederate Forces were able to prevent complete Union control of Louisiana and stop progression of the Civil War into Texas. Museum on site and walking tour available. Take I-49, to Hwy 84, watch for the signs to Mansfield State Historic Site. 318-872-1474
Poverty Point
This area is a prehistoric archeological site dating between 1650-700 B.C. in northwestern Louisiana. Discovered in 1873, researchers at that time believed the site to be a natural formation. However, in the 1950’s, aerial photographs revealed the complexity of the man-made earthworks. Epps, La. 888-926-5492

National Parks

Kisatchie Hills Wilderness National Park
This 8,700-acre wilderness area is home to the alligator and the long legged birds plus features some of the most unique topography in Louisiana including unusually steep and rugged terrain, sandstone mesas and bluffs, distinct forest ecosystems, and outcroppings with several distinct forest types. 106 Old Highway 6 West, Natchitoches, La. 318-352-2568
